About the candidate
Meet Sundar Subbarayan
Public education has been a driving force in both my career and personal life. As a VP at Khan Academy, I led implementation of Khan Academy in MVWSD, LASD, and 200 plus schools across the country. Today, I mentor and tutor students in MVLA and LASD schools, serve as an AVID mentor at LAHS, and am a member of the MVWSD AI Committee. My wife, Purnima, and I have two children who attended MVWSD and MVLA schools, and I spent many years volunteering in their classrooms.
I hold a BS in Engineering from IIT Bombay, an MS in Computer Science from the University of California, and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon. After a 30 year career in technology, most recently as an executive at Microsoft, I retired to devote more time to education and community service. I am also a triathlete who enjoys hiking, skiing, and cooking. I live by the motto, “Consistently Good is Better than Occasionally Great.”
If elected, I will focus on three commitments: exceptional educational outcomes for every student, fiscal discipline that ensures every dollar is invested wisely, and community partnerships built on regular engagement so every voice is heard.
Every Student. Every Dollar. Every Voice.

Why the school board matters
MVWSD trustees set the district’s direction: approving the budget, adopting policy, overseeing the superintendent, and making sure every school serves every student well. It is one of the most direct ways a community shapes its children’s future.
